New Book Announced!

The Lowell Area Historical Museum is proud to announce the publication of a new book.

Lowell, a photographic book published by Arcadia Press, will be released this July. Arcadia Press specializes in local histories featuring photographs. The book will be available at local and national book stores and other vendors, bringing increased visibility to our museum and community. Books purchased directly from the Museum will also generate income to help support our operating expenses.

The book uses over two hundred photographs, many never published before, to explore the history of Lowell. Familiar landmarks such as the Lowell Showboat and Fallasburg Park appear in the book alongside images of lesser known attractions, businesses and scenes. Photographs of Main Street, railroads, schools and churches join residential scenes and pictures of picnics, celebrations and other recreations to populate this new book with a wealth of images from Lowell’s past.

Order your copy today! Shipping is also available for orders out of the Lowell area. The books are expected to arrive the week of July 5th.

Cobblers to Tin-Knockers – Lowell’s retailing past
Come remember the past as you visit and study the timeline of the eight stores fronts that were in the Lyon Block.  You will see the following stores Gee’s Hardware, Hill’s Shoes, Hartman’s Drugs, Coons Men Store, and Hazel’s Hat Shop.   This block is located where Cousins’ Hallmark and Dr. James Reagan are located today.   This exhibit captures what it was like to shop in Lowell during an earlier time in our history. Using artifacts from the Museum’s collection as well as borrowed objects from community members and institutions, graphics and text call out the story behind retailing in Lowell. This exhibit highlights the advancements, marketing, and the many businesses located on this block.   Currently “Cobblers to Tin-Knockers” is showcased in the Museum’s special exhibits gallery from October 3, 2008 through August 30, 2010
