This wooden building on the bridge was built before 1885. In 1885, it was a restaurant; in 1892, it was Blakeslee & Murphy Meat Market then James Murphy Meats. The first building was destroyed when Boylan’s Hardware store on the corner to the east (where Flat River Grill is today) exploded and burned in April, 1905. A small building was reconstructed on the site. In 1908, A. A. and H. C. Scott opened the “Little Candy Store” on the bridge making and selling home-made candy, ice cream cones, pop, milk shakes and popcorn. The place was closed for 17 months when Mr. Scott passed away and for 3 months when Hattie’s mother died. Except for those periods, Hattie Scott operated her store for 36 years, 1908-1944. In 1913, she operated as the Durand Creamery Co. Later it was called “Hattie Scott’s Kandy Kitchen. The building on this site was destroyed for the second time in the fire of 1958. Images: Mrs. Hattie Scott is standing in front of her store on the north side of the bridge over the Flat River. At one point was called Durand Creamery Co. Hattie Scott is pictured wearing a white apron in front of “Hattie Scott’s Kandy Kitchen.” |
