HistoryFounded in 1989 by a group of community members anxious to preserve the rich and wonderful history of the Lowell area, the Lowell Area Historical Museum’s guiding mission is: “to enrich, delight and inspire the public through the presentation and preservation of the Lowell area history”.
Originally named the Lowell Area Historical Association, the Museum was incorporated as a Michigan non-profit organization in 1990 and was granted 501(c) (3) status in 1994. The name was changed to the Lowell Area Historical Museum in the year 2000. Located in the historic 1873 Graham Home (which is on the National Register of Historic Places) the west side of the Museum opened to the public in September 2001. The east side of the Graham home has been refurbished and is once again the site of a beautiful Victorian Parlor, Dining Room, Porch and Garden. These lovely rooms, porch, garden and gallery opened to the public in September, 2004 and help us tell another facet of our community’s history. The Museum also features an Early History, Industry, Fur Trade and Changing Exhibit Gallery. The Museum has been very enthusiastically received and supported by the community and has welcomed thousands of visitors since it opened. Through its “Keeping History Alive” programs and exhibits, the Museum takes a very active role in developing and implementing innovative programs that “enrich, delight and inspire our community and visitors” with our rich culture and heritage. It is the belief of the Museum’s governing board that it is not enough to establish a museum for visitors, but rather programming must be developed and presented to the public that will interest, educate and excite their desire for knowledge and learning of their history and heritage. Partnerships with our schools and local organizations help us provide programs such as “Grandma’s Trunk” and "Native American Lifeways." The Museum is home to more than 15,000 photographs and artifacts that have been donated by area residents. This number continues to grow weekly, which represents a true investment by our community in the preservation or our rich and wonderful history. |
